National Center on Caregiving

The Family Caregiver Alliance provides key statistics on long-term care to help individuals, caregivers, and policymakers understand the growing need for caregiving services in the U.S. The data highlights the prevalence, demographics, and economic impact of caregiving.

Key Statistics:

  • Prevalence of Informal Care – The use of informal care among Americans aged 65+ increased from 57% in 1994 to 66% in 1999, while the combined use of informal and formal care decreased from 36% to 26%.

  • Age of Caregivers – About 30% of caregivers providing long-term care are aged 65 or older, with an additional 15% aged 45–54.

  • Gender Distribution – 75% of caregivers are women, and they spend up to 50% more time caregiving compared to men.

  • Health Impact – Long-term caregivers report increased stress and health issues, with older caregivers (65+) being most affected.

  • Time Spent on Caregiving – Family caregivers provide an average of 24.4 hours per week, while nearly 25% spend over 41 hours per week on caregiving tasks.

  • Economic Value of Caregiving – The unpaid labor of family caregivers was valued at $450 billion in 2009.

Long-term caregiving is essential to the healthcare system, but it places significant emotional, physical, and financial burdens on caregivers. More resources and support systems are needed to sustain this crucial work.
